Ghanaian singer targets Guinness World Record

Ghanaian singer and entrepreneur Afua Asantewaa Aduonum will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon by an individual from 24 to 27 December in Accra.

Aduonum confirmed the news on Facebook this week, revealing that her application to attempt the record had been accepted, sharing an email from the Guinness World Records.

“We are pleased to inform you that your application has been accepted under the following title: Longest singing marathon,” the email partly reads.

Ms Aduonum explained in a clip on Instagram that the endeavour is geared toward spotlighting local music globally. “This attempt is strictly for Ghanaian songs – we’re doing this to promote Ghanaian songs, from gospel, highlife, hiplife… name it,” she said.

The record is currently held by Sunil Waghmare of India. He achieved in the feat in Nagpur from 3 to 7 March 2012, featuring a diverse selection of popular Indian songs with no repetition within a four-hour period. The marathon concluded on the evening of 7 March, with Waghmare engaging in a sing-along session with his supporters.

To break Waghmare’s record, Aduonum aims to sing for more than 117 hours in a continuous marathon. Per the regulations, Afua must avoid repeating songs, and each rendition must fall within a two-minute mark. To meet this criteria, she is set to perform over 3 200 Ghanaian songs to successfully break the record.

Other African acts who have secured Guinness world records include Afrobeat founder Fela Kuti, recognised for the most studio album recordings, having produced 46 albums as a solo artist over a remarkable career spanning 23 years, from 1969 to 1992. Fellow Nigerian music star Wizkid also holds a record for being the artist behind the first track to achieve one billion streams on Spotify, accomplished with ‘One Dance’ on 16 December 2016.

Earlier this year, Rema entered the Guinness World Records with his global hit ‘Calm Down,’ making history as the first No 1 hit on The Official MENA Chart, the world’s inaugural regional streaming chart.
