6 years ago, when i announced the imminent first ever DJ awards in Africa, Ghana DJ Awards, Babie Dapaah, then a host of an entertainment show dubbed Hot Gossip on TV3, mocked, "but how many DJs are there in Ghana?".
"I can count only 6 so what is the essence of this awards?", she ridiculed. I remember her words so vividly because i was saddened by her unfortunate and non-factual comment which would create a negative impression on her viewers and ridicule the initiative.
Posterity spoke when the first edition's nominees were announced. Guess what. Over 100 NOMINEES from across the country were listed from various disciplines of the art and profession.
Serving as a an inspiration and motivation, many who had dismantled their gadgets and temporarily hanged their gloves and had packed their Turntables under their beds had their passion rejuvenated and and reassembled to embrace the new wave. Battle DJs, Scratch DJs, Mobile DJs, Radio DJs reinforced their craft, started injecting a lot more resources into the vibrant art and started raking returns. It's been a spectacular period.
Other awards shows started plugging in to recognise DJs as well; great development! It adds up to shine a light of great significance of the art though every DJs dream would be to win a "grammy"; A GHANA DJ AWARD.
Six years down the lane 100s of DJs are contributing immensely to the socio-economic development of the country by promoting and circulating Ghana music, powering good entertainment at several Pubs and Nightclubs across the country, Radio stations are adapting DJing as part of their programing, TV stations are doing same, DJs are getting endorsement deals, DJs are headlining major entertainment shows, DJs are headlining corporate institution entertainment events, producing more great music, collaborating with top music artistes and are getting some great accolades!
